Geography Programme of Study

Key Stage 3

Year 7

Year 8

Autumn Term 1

Introduction to Geography and map skills. This includes the study of different types of maps and how they help us to understand the world (5) (6).

Natural Hazards- Students will learn about the continents of the world and the processes that combine together to create these continents.

They will also learn how these natural processes can have destructive repercussions for human settlement around it.

Here the skills of case study analysis and understanding of GCSE exam command words are introduced and then reinforced throughout the year (1) (2) (3).

Autumn Term 2

Geography of Great Britain - Students will learn how and why we are British and the physical and human aspects of the British Isles (3).

Biome- Students will learn about the different aspects of the world that combine to maintain life on earth. This will then help them to understand how life thrives in some environments or becomes threatened in others. They will learn about the ability of humans and animals to adapt to different environments and how this can be sustainable in some places, but threatening in other places (1), (4).

Spring Term 1

China- Students will learn about the landscape, the relief, the culture and the impact of the Chinese way of life on the global human environment  (1).

Brazil- Continuing from the study of Biome students will learn about the country that houses 80% of the TRF and how the people have learned to manage its resources. They will also learn about the complex and fragile balance between man and the environment. The topic also covers a lot of themes on case study analysis and also some DME skills can be thought here (2) (4).

Spring Term 2

Global Fashion Industry- Students will learn the impact of globalisation on the fashion industry and the positive and negative impact of the growing global fashion industry. The case study could include but not limited to Nike in Vietnam and Primarks in Bangladesh (3).

Development- Students will learn about ways in which countries can be compared based on their level of development. They will also learn about the difference between the standard of living and quality of life and how they mean different things for different people (3).

Summer Term 1

A Load of Rubbish- Students will learn about the different ways we dispose of waste in our country and what happens to our waste. They will then be able to compare waste disposal between the UK and an Asian country. This will give them an understanding of the difference between the rich and prosperous countries and poor countries. (3)

Rivers - Students will learn about the drainage basin and the different attributes and how they form. They will learn about different river landforms and how they form waterfalls and meanders. They will also learn about what will make a river flood (4) (5) (6).

Summer Term 2

Africa- Students will learn the general physical and human factors about Africa. They will then have the opportunity to choose a country in Africa and research on different aspects of the country's physical and human aspect. They will then creatively present this to the whole class. There will be an opportunity to learn some IT skills of presentation like video editing Powtoon and Prezi (1) (2) (3) (4) (5).

Globe house DME-Students will learn how to gather information using the most modern GIS techniques. They will learn how to present their findings and how to complete a field study writeup. Using this they can then make a decision based on evidence they collected from the field (7) (8).

Extra-curricular provision

Trip to Stockwood Park Museum to observe artifacts on British lie in the past  (5) (6) (8).

Trip to the National History Museum to observe cultures from around the world (8).

Field trip to Luton High street to do a survey on the decline of the High street (8).

Field trip to Kew Botanical Gardens to observe different Biomes from around the world (1) (8).

Field trip to Farley Stockwood Park to carry out data collection on urban development (1) (7) (8).

Geography Programme of Study: Key Stage 3

Department for Education - Purpose of Study

Students should be taught to:

Locational knowledge

  1. extend their locational knowledge and deepen their spatial awareness of the world’s countries using maps of the world to focus on Africa, Russia, Asia (including China and India), and the Middle East, focusing on their environmental regions, including polar and hot deserts, key physical and human characteristics, countries and major cities

Place Knowledge

  1. understand geographical similarities, differences and links between places through the study of human and physical geography of a region within Africa, and of a region within Asia

Human and physical geography

  1. understand, through the use of detailed place-based exemplars at a variety of scales, the key processes in:
    • physical geography relating to: geological timescales and plate tectonics; rocks, weathering and soils; weather and climate, including the change in climate from the Ice Age to the present; and glaciation, hydrology and coasts
    • human geography relating to: population and urbanisation; international development; economic activity in the primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary sectors; and the use of natural resources
  2. understand how human and physical processes interact to influence, and change landscapes, environments and the climate; and how human activity relies on effective functioning of natural systems

Geographical skills and fieldwork

  1. build on their knowledge of globes, maps and atlases and apply and develop this knowledge routinely in the classroom and in the field
  2. interpret Ordnance Survey maps in the classroom and the field, including using grid references and scale, topographical and other thematic mapping, and aerial and satellite photographs
  3. use Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to view, analyse and interpret places and data
  4. use fieldwork in contrasting locations to collect, analyse and draw conclusions from geographical data, using multiple sources of increasingly complex information.
